2020 Vision & The General Election

Whichever side of the political spectrum you fall, the general election result was at least decisive. Talk of landslides, historic wins and so on have been bandied around, and if you break it down, nearly 14 million people voted for the Conservative party, whilst Labour had a tougher time, losing a fair chunk of votes compared to the 2017 election, ending up with just over 10 million votes.

In recent history we’ve seen a trend of hung parliaments, so perhaps it should be a good thing that we now have a majority government, which in theory should also be a stable government. This will also somewhat simplify Brexit negotiations, which now two years on finally feels like we’re coming out of this state of inertia.

The so-called “Boris bounce” is already apparent, with the Sterling strengthening and the FTSE up. Property commentators are already predicting that there will be a slow and steady increase in property values.

In London, particularly, there is a pent up demand to buy as people have been waiting for stability for making their decisions to buy or sell. With mortgage interest rates at a historic low and property being priced fairly attractively as of right now, the prospect of home ownership is looking highly inviting.

Looking ahead, our crystal ball sees a pick up in both buyer and seller activity next year, and in hindsight, those people who braved the political uncertainty and decided to jump on the property ladder in 2019 regardless will be seen to have had 2020 vision!

Now it’s time to head off and stuff a Turkey!
